Visit Burj Khalifa
Still, visiting Burj Khalifa is not always as simple as choosing a ticket and heading to the entrance. There are different observation levels, ticket types and time slots, and the experience can change considerably depending on when you visit. Daytime, sunset and evening visits each show a different side of Dubai. That is why it helps to plan Burj Khalifa as the anchor of your time in Downtown Dubai. Once you know which observation deck you want to visit and when you want to go, it becomes much easier to plan Dubai Mall, Burj Lake, dinner or more time exploring Downtown Dubai around it.

Why Burj Khalifa is Dubai’s most famous landmark
Burj Khalifa is the building that defines Dubai’s skyline. At 828 metres tall, it rises far above the surrounding towers and can be seen from many parts of the city. Even in a city filled with modern architecture, its height makes it immediately recognizable. Seeing the tower from the ground is impressive, but the experience changes completely once you travel up into the building. The observation decks give you sweeping views across Downtown Dubai, the city’s highways and neighbourhoods, the desert beyond the skyline and the Persian Gulf in the distance.
The visit is not only about being inside the world’s tallest building. Part of the experience is seeing the scale of Dubai from above. Roads that feel enormous at street level become thin lines, skyscrapers appear small below you and the edge of the city becomes much easier to see. This is also an attraction where timing matters. The view changes throughout the day, and the most popular periods can be considerably busier than others. During daylight, it is easier to see the scale and layout of Dubai. Around sunset, the changing light makes the experience particularly popular. After dark, the city becomes a landscape of illuminated roads and skyscrapers. For that reason, one of the first questions to answer is not simply whether you want to visit Burj Khalifa, but when you want to visit and how high you want to go.
Tickets and observation decks
Burj Khalifa tickets can be confusing at first because there is no single visitor experience. Different tickets give access to different levels of the tower, and choosing between them can make a considerable difference to both the experience and the price. Levels 124 and 125 are the classic choice for most visitors. These observation levels are 456 metres above the ground and offer panoramic views across Dubai, with access to an outdoor terrace on Level 124.
If you want to go higher, Level 148 offers a more premium experience. At 555 metres above the ground, it has its own observation deck and outdoor terrace and also includes access to Levels 124 and 125. Higher still is The Lounge on Levels 152, 153 and 154. At around 585 metres above the ground, this is the highest visitor experience inside Burj Khalifa and is aimed more at visitors looking for a premium experience than a standard observation deck visit.
For most first-time visitors, Levels 124 and 125 give you the classic Burj Khalifa experience. Going higher is less about simply getting a better view and more about the type of experience you want and how much you are prepared to spend. Your ticket choice should therefore not be treated as a small detail. Decide first what kind of experience you want, then choose the time of day that suits it.
Best time to visit Burj Khalifa
There is no single best time to visit Burj Khalifa because the experience changes considerably throughout the day. A daytime visit usually gives you the clearest view of Dubai itself. You can see the layout of Downtown Dubai, the roads stretching through the city, the coastline and the transition from dense urban development to desert. On a clear day, this is the best time to appreciate just how large Dubai has become.
Sunset is the most dramatic choice for many visitors. Arriving while it is still light gives you the chance to see Dubai during the day, watch the light change and stay as the city begins to illuminate below you. That also makes sunset one of the most popular periods to visit. If seeing the sunset from Burj Khalifa is important to you, it is worth planning this part of your visit in advance rather than simply choosing whatever time remains available.
An evening visit feels completely different. The details of the desert and coastline become less visible, but Dubai’s illuminated roads, towers and neighbourhoods create a spectacular cityscape below you. Your choice therefore depends on what matters most: clear long-distance views, the transition around sunset or Dubai after dark.

What else to see near Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa may be the main attraction, but there is much more to see around the tower. Several of Dubai’s best-known sights are concentrated in Downtown Dubai, making this one of the easiest parts of the city to explore before or after your visit.
Dubai Mall
Dubai Mall sits directly beside Burj Khalifa and is the easiest place to combine with your visit. It is far more than a shopping centre, with restaurants, entertainment and attractions spread across an enormous complex. It is also where visitors access the main Burj Khalifa observation experience. Because the mall is so large, walking to the entrance can take longer than expected. If you have a timed ticket, it is better to arrive in the area with plenty of time rather than entering Dubai Mall just before your booked slot.
Burj Lake
Burj Lake sits directly below Burj Khalifa and gives you some of the best ground-level views of the tower. Walking around the waterfront provides a completely different perspective after seeing Dubai from hundreds of metres above the city. The area is particularly attractive later in the day when the temperature begins to drop and Downtown Dubai lights up around the water.
Burj Park
Burj Park offers more open views of Burj Khalifa and the surrounding Downtown skyline. It is a useful place to walk, take photographs or simply step away from the busy interiors of Dubai Mall. From here, the height of Burj Khalifa becomes especially apparent. Standing close to the tower and trying to take in its full height is almost the opposite experience of looking down from its observation decks.
Souk Al Bahar
Souk Al Bahar sits across the water from Dubai Mall and offers a different atmosphere from the modern shopping centre next door. Its restaurants and terraces make it a convenient place to stop for lunch or dinner while remaining close to Burj Khalifa. It can also work well as a quieter break between exploring Dubai Mall and visiting the tower.
Downtown Dubai
Downtown Dubai is worth treating as a destination rather than simply the location of Burj Khalifa. The tower, Dubai Mall, Burj Lake, restaurants, hotels and surrounding skyline are all concentrated within the same area. Spending several hours here allows you to see Burj Khalifa from different perspectives before and after going up. For many visitors, that makes the experience feel more complete than simply arriving for a booked time slot and leaving immediately afterwards.

Planning a realistic Burj Khalifa visit
The easiest way to plan Burj Khalifa is to start with the observation deck and time slot you want and build the rest of your Downtown Dubai visit around them. First decide how high you want to go. For the classic experience, Levels 124 and 125 are the obvious starting point. Choose Level 148 if you want a higher and more premium visit, or consider The Lounge if the experience itself matters as much as reaching an observation deck.
Then decide what you want to see from above. Daylight is better for seeing Dubai and the surrounding landscape clearly. Sunset lets you experience the transition from day to night, while evening gives you the most dramatic view of the illuminated city. After that, plan what you want to do around the tower. Dubai Mall and the waterfront are easy additions, while lunch or dinner in Downtown Dubai can turn the visit into a longer afternoon or evening.
Do not plan everything too tightly. Dubai Mall is enormous, walking distances can be longer than they appear and security, queues and elevators all take time. Your booked entry time is therefore better treated as the fixed point of the day, with some flexibility around it. For a first visit, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and some time around Burj Lake make a natural combination. You do not need to fill every hour with another attraction. Part of the appeal of Downtown Dubai is simply seeing the tower from different angles and watching the area change from day to night.
Start with Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa is the best starting point for planning your time in Downtown Dubai. Your choice of observation deck and time slot affects your ticket price, the views you will see and how you can organize the rest of your visit. Once that part is clear, everything else becomes easier to plan.
Use this site to compare Burj Khalifa tickets, understand the different observation levels, choose the best time to visit and find practical information for your trip. You can then decide how much of Downtown Dubai you want to include before or after going up the tower. Burj Khalifa may be the highlight, but seeing the tower from both perspectives is what makes the visit complete: first looking up at it from Downtown Dubai, and then looking back down over the city from hundreds of metres above the ground.
History
Burj Khalifa has a much shorter history than Dubai’s traditional landmarks, but its story is closely connected to the city’s rapid transformation into a global destination. Construction began in 2004 as part of the development of what is now Downtown Dubai. The ambition was not simply to build another skyscraper. The project was designed to create a new centrepiece for Dubai and a building that would rise far beyond the height of existing towers.
Burj Khalifa was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with architect Adrian Smith playing a leading role in its design. Its distinctive Y-shaped plan and narrowing form help give the tower its recognizable appearance while also responding to the enormous structural challenges created by its height. As construction progressed, the tower passed a series of height records before eventually reaching 828 metres. The completed building contains residences, offices, hotel accommodation, restaurants and visitor experiences, making it much more than an observation tower.
Burj Khalifa officially opened on 4 January 2010. During its development it had been known as Burj Dubai, but at its inauguration the building was named Burj Khalifa. At 828 metres, it became the tallest building in the world and quickly became the defining feature of Dubai’s skyline.

Nowadays
Today, Burj Khalifa remains the tallest building in the world and one of the most recognizable landmarks in Dubai. What began as an extraordinary engineering project has become one of the symbols most closely associated with the city. Visitors can experience the tower in several ways. The classic observation experience is on Levels 124 and 125, while Level 148 offers a higher and more premium observation deck. The Lounge extends the visitor experience even farther up the building to Levels 152, 153 and 154.
But Burj Khalifa is more than the view from inside. From the streets and waterfront of Downtown Dubai, the building dominates almost every perspective. Its appearance changes throughout the day as sunlight reflects from its exterior, while after dark the illuminated tower becomes part of Dubai’s nighttime skyline. For first-time visitors, the contrast is one of the most memorable parts of the experience. From the ground, Burj Khalifa seems almost impossibly tall. From its observation decks, much of Dubai suddenly seems small. Seeing both sides is what makes a visit complete.
